IPNA - CSIC
Scientific Researcher at IPNA‑CSIC specializing in organic synthesis, sustainable catalysis, biomolecules, and natural product synthesis. His work integrates the preparation of bioactive compounds, chemical modification of metabolites, and the development of concise, stereoselective synthetic methodologies.
He earned his Ph.D. at the University of La Laguna in 1996 and completed a MEC‑funded postdoctoral stay at Columbia University with Prof. Samuel J. Danishefsky, contributing to the synthesis of the anticancer drug Ecteinascidin 743 (Yondelis®). After positions at ULL, he joined CSIC, becoming Scientific Researcher in 2020. His group pioneered Fe(III)‑catalyzed Prins cyclizations for the sustainable synthesis of oxa‑ and azacycles and their application to natural products.
He has also held significant academic and institutional leadership roles within CSIC and the RSEQ. he served as Deputy Director of the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology for four years and as Director for another four years. He is currently the Director of the Department of Molecular Sciences at the same center.
