He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1998 under Prof. David Horne, followed by postdoctoral research at Caltech with Prof. Peter Dervan and at The Scripps Research Institute with Prof. Joel Gottesfeld. After beginning his independent career at North Carolina State University in 2004, he joined Notre Dame in 2018. His contributions include designing new antibacterial agents and synthetic methods to combat antibiotic failure and multidrug‑resistant pathogens.
His work has earned multiple distinctions, including the NCSU Faculty Scholar Award, NCSU Entrepreneur of the Year, ACS Southeast Industrial Innovator Award, and the Sigma Xi Research Award.
